Complete Bev-Bel
N Scale Locomotive List

Copyright © 1999-2017 by Bill's Railroad Empire®

Bev-Bel Corporation was a well-known distributor of model trains. They offered numerous N and HO scale locomotives, freight, and passenger cars and sets made by a number of manufacturers. They were painted and decorated by or for Bev-Bel in railroad, circus, holiday, and patriotic schemes.

This list includes all (or most) of the N scale locomotives that were offered by Bev-Bel. In addition, Bev-Bel produced approximately 100 N scale freight and passenger cars.

Bev-Bel didn't publish consumer catalogs and it is sometimes difficult to locate information about what was actually produced.

I have used ads from model railroading magazines, mail order catalogs, Greenberg's Guides to N Gauge Trains (1981 and 1985), Brooklyn Locomotive Works, TrainMaster of Montogomery, Inc., George's Model Trains (Canada), and similar sources to obtain this information.

Manufacturer numbers, road numbers, and paint schemes will be added to this list as time permits. Fortunately, I have many of the locomotives offered by Bev-Bel in the 1990s for documentation.

I recently discovered that Bev-Bel is now out of business. Jerry Bohlander recently informed me that the Bev-Bel building is to be torn down.

Life-Like GP9U locomotives are late-2003 Life-Like Canada production. Information from Brooklyn Locomotive Works.

    LIFE-LIKE SW8/900/600 SWITCHERS

In January 2004, Hobbycraft (Life-Like of Canada) announced the release of these Canadian switchers in several roadnames and paint schemes. I am not sure of any connection that Bev-Bel might have with this offering.

I have included a link to the Brooklyn Locomotive Works page that lists these and other Canadian roadname releases.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find information regarding recent Bev-Bel releases. I would appreciate any information regarding their N scale locomotive offerings.

    LIFE-LIKE EMD GP18 LOCOMOTIVES

  • NYS&W (Susquehanna) #1804 (Low Nose) (Yellow/Blk) (#16000)

Thanks to Jacob Newman for providing information about the Susquehanna GP18. It appears that both Life-Like and Bev-Bel marketed this item. There is also a second road number (#1802).

Numerous Specialty Sets were offered in the early 1990s. The most notable included:
  • #L-4107--"Minuteman"--B&M F7A #7572 with four patriotic freight cars and a "Minuteman" caboose
  • #L-4088--Burlington Northern GP38-2 #2098 with five Christmas freight cars
  • #L-4087--CSX Transportation GP38-2 #2098 (Gray/Blue) with four circus box cars and caboose
  • #L-4080--CSX Transportation GP38-2 #6638 (Gray/Blue) with five 100-ton hoppers
  • #L-4108--"The Pennsylvanian"--Lehigh Valley F7A #510 (Tuscan/Black) with four patriotic freight cars and "Spirit of '76" caboose
  • #L-4106--Circus Set No. 1--"J&J's Famous Baltimore Circus"--Western Maryland F7A #324 (R/W/Blk) with four circus box cars and WM caboose
  • #L-4109--Circus Set No. 2--"J&J Circus/The Pride of Delmarva"--Western Maryland GP38-2 #3577 (R/W/Blk) with four circus box cars and "Tiger" circus caboose
  • "Mid America Express" (#I-4085)--Monon BL2 #36 with five freight cars (Thanks, Jerry Bohlander)

In the mid-1990s, Bev-Bel offered a variety of Life-Like F7A, E8A, GP18, GP38-2, and BL2 locomotives in sets that included five freight cars. The locomotive boxes probably have Bev-Bel labeling. Road names and numbers are the same as those released by Life-Like.

Several sets included FA1/FA2 locomotives in Canadian road names with four freight cars.

Atlas F9A, FA1, GP9, GP30 locomotives were manufactured by Roco (Austria) in the 1970s-1980s. Atlas RS3 locomotives were made by Kato (Japan) in 1984.

Bev-Bel advertised a NYC GP9 and an Erie FA1 but these were not produced. They also advertised Atlas E7As (Roco) in ACL, NYC, and PRR schemes that were later offered by Atlas and not provided by Bev-Bel.

This list is nearly complete. Next, I'll make any necessary changes and additions and list the paint schemes where possible.

I started this list in late March 2002 and I'm still trying to locate other N scale locomotives produced by Bev-Bel. If you know of any that are not listed, I'd appreciate it if you'd inform me.

Send E-Mail to: Bill's Railroad Empire

I haven't updated this listing since 2002 since information about Bev-Bel was becoming very difficult to find. In 2008, it appears that Bev-Bel is no longer in business.
